Meet Mike Ashworth: Category Marketing Manager for Fungicides at Corteva

Something went wrong. Please try again later...
Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to join Corteva?

I studied Applied Biology at Hatfield Polytechnic, where the course included an industrial placement. I spent that year as an assistant to a trials officer at BASF and was so impressed by the nature of the work that I set out to become a field trials officer myself after graduating. That opportunity came with Dow Elanco, where I progressed from an internal technical support role into a customer technical support role. I later moved to DuPont to take an account management role, and from there I completed project management training, which led me into product management. I have continued in that role through the merger that formed Corteva, and here I am today!

Do you have a connection to agriculture outside of your role at Corteva?

I have no background in agriculture whatsoever, but I’ve had an interest in the natural world from a young age. I guess lacking that background can be seen from two perspectives. The way I prefer is that I didn’t bring any historical prejudices with me, so I was able to approach the science with fresh eyes.

What are the key factors that motivate you in your role at Corteva?

The ultimate motivation comes from the obvious need to feed a growing global population with good quality, safe food. Why Corteva? Because Corteva really values a collaborative approach, which makes you feel your opinions matter. The real test of a company is how it responds when something goes wrong. Does everyone run away, or do they step in to help? At Corteva, they help.

Can you share a standout moment from your time in this role?

I’ve had many interesting roles and projects in my career, but the stand-out has to be bringing Inatreq™ active to the market. I was part of an amazing team, and Corteva gave us the freedom to express our creativity, which resulted in an excellent launch of Inatreq and the products built on that active.

What are you most looking forward to in the coming year at Corteva?

We are starting to introduce a new fungicide molecule to the trade in preparation for its farm launch in a few years. This is always an interesting time—working with different elements of the agricultural trade to ensure the product is understood, while also listening to feedback on how the product might be used most effectively.

What is the most unexpected place you've seen Corteva's impact?

While on holiday at a remote bush camp in Zambia, I was surprised to meet someone who knew Corteva. During dinner, a staff member named Nedson asked what I did for a living. When I mentioned Corteva, his face lit up with recognition. “Ahh, Corteva, yes I know them,” he said. It turned out he managed the camp’s farm and invited me to visit.

A few days later, I toured their impressive operation. They had built the farm to supply fresh produce to the camps, overcoming early challenges through experimentation. Now, they’re planning a community outreach project to share their agricultural knowledge locally.

It was a powerful moment. In the heart of Zambia, I met someone who not only knew exactly who Corteva was, but also shared our passion for agriculture, innovation, and community enrichment. It was a perfect reminder of Corteva’s global reach and the positive impact agriculture can have.

How do you stay up to date with the latest advancements and trends in agriculture?

There are meetings, conferences, papers and press, but the best way to truly understand the needs of the market is by talking and listening to the people who are at the heart of the industry.

What advice would you offer to professionals aspiring to pursue a similar career path or leadership role in the agriculture industry?

Go for it. What’s stopping you? Of course, there are basic educational requirements, but after that, it’s all down to you. Show enthusiasm, put forward your ideas and think creatively about the future, because as an R&D company, we’re shaping it!

Would you recommend Corteva as a place to work?

Different people and different companies all have their strengths and weaknesses. But if you like agriculture, enjoy a collaborative working environment and want the freedom to operate and make decisions, then Corteva could be for you!

Outside of work, where are we most likely to find you or what activities do you enjoy?

I’ve located myself in the Peak District as a result of my love of hill walking with my family and our Vizsla, Roux. Besides that, I play table tennis and have just started my first attempt at furniture restoration (a learning experience!). Gardening is another big source of joy for me. Remember that curiosity for the natural world I mentioned having as a kid? It’s still with me!

If you are looking for a role with a difference, Corteva is the right choice, providing valuable learning experiences. Find out more about our talented team here.
