Make sure overnight temperatures are right before applying new clover-safe herbicide

As spring unfolds with favourable conditions, many farmers are getting on top of required fieldwork, so thoughts are turning to weed control in grassland.

There has been a lot of excitement in recent weeks about the launch of Corteva’s new clover-safe herbicide ProClova® XL, which is now available to UK farmers.

Containing the new active ingredient Rinskor™, which has the chemical name florpyrauxifen-benzyl, ProClova XL is a valuable addition to the grassland farmers’ weed control toolbox, providing an easy and effective way to manage weeds while preserving the benefits of clover-rich swards.

Dave Gurney, Field Technical Manager for Grassland Crop Protection at Corteva AgriScience says: “ProClova XL is an innovative herbicide which safeguards valuable clover while delivering exceptional control of seedling weeds in newly sown leys and persistent perennial weeds in established grassland. With an increasing interest in growing home-grown protein in the form of clover, ProClova XL will become an important management tool to aid this effort.”

For optimum levels of weed control, application is recommended in the spring. Weeds should be actively growing, pre-flowering and stress-free. While daytime temperatures have been quite high in recent weeks, it is also important to note that overnight temperatures have dropped very low.

Dave says: “ProClova XL gives optimum control when overnight temperatures remain above 8°C for a period of three days either side of application. This temperature requirement can be easily monitored using Corteva’s free Forage App which is available from the Apple Store and Google Play.

“By getting this application requirement correct, farmers will enjoy optimised weed control and clover-safety. Like other clover-safe herbicides, ProClova® XL can occasionally cause visual symptoms to white and red clover, such as deformation and growth inhibition, but these are transitory with full recovery thereafter. Red clover is more sensitive, so it needs to be better established. Consequently, earliest treatment of red clover is in the spring of the year after sowing following over-wintering,” he says.

ProClova XL will resonate widely as many newly sown leys are planted and then swamped with weeds which limit the ley’s potential on both quantity and quality of forage.

Dave concludes: “Farmers now have a weed control solution safe to both grass and clover, which can be used on newly sown leys for seedling weed control as well as on bigger perennial weeds in established grassland, reflecting the outstanding technology this product represents.”
